A newcomer to this country, Argiope bruennichi, has arrived from the Mediterranean area. It is now found around the South coast and on chalk downland.
The female spider (shown here) is about 15mm long. The male is much smaller, about 5mm.
This female has made her web low down in the grass and has caught a Chalkhill Blue butterfly, although grasshoppers and crickets are her favourite food..
